Likert-Type Scale Response Anchors
One type of question often incorporated into surveys to gather information on respondants beliefs and attitudes is a Likert item. When designing Likert items, make certain response options are balanced, i.e. there are an equal number of positive and negative options and the difference between values is the same so as to not skew your results.
Balanced | Not Balanced |
Strongly Disagree | Disagree Completely |
Disagree | Strongly Disagree |
Neutral | Disagree Somewhat |
Agree | Neutral |
Strongly Agree | Strongly Agree |
You can chose to have an odd-point scale that includes a neutral middle option as a choice, or a forced-choice method by having an even-point scale with no neutral middle.
